The Marching Statesmen competed in the Lynchburg Classic Virginia Marching Band Cooperative competition on Saturday, October 13, 2018, and won the 6A Division, as well as all the individual awards for that division (Best Music, Best General Effect, Best Visual, Best Percussion, and Best Colorguard). In addition, the Marching Statesmen had the highest score in Divisions 4, 5, and 6, and were pronounced Grand Champion of the upper bands. Click here to see a video of the award-winning performance.
We compete for the second time this season on Saturday, October 13, in the VMBC Lynchburg Classic at the Lynchburg City Stadium, 3180 Fort Ave in Lynchburg, VA in Class AAAAAA. We won our first competition at Annapolis and we hope this one goes as well.
Here is the schedule for the day:
10am-12pm- Rehearse in our stadium.
12 pm- Load trucks.
12-1:30pm- Break, students are free to leave campus at this time. Recommend that you eat a large lunch during this break.
1:30pm- Call time. Everyone needs to wear their black "Marshall Band" shirt, compression/bike shorts or black leggings, and high black socks under their uniform. Sweatpants over the compression shorts suggested for the bus ride (we are not wearing half uniforms on the bus). Bring $5 for dinner, your band hoodie or band jacket (write your name in it!), and a lot of snacks for the bus. Load buses.
1:45pm- Leave GCM for Lynchburg.
5:45pm- Arrive at Lynchburg City Stadium. Bathroom break, unload, change into uniforms.
7:25pm- Leave warmup
8:00pm- Return to buses, change, dinner
9:30pm- Leave Lynchburg
1:15am- Arrive at GCM, unload
Additional Information for Parents
For those that have not participated before, we need to move the entire band including students, staff, uniforms, marching and front ensemble instruments, and props from Marshall High School to the competition location and back. This requires a cadre of parents, several buses and two trucks. Performing at these competitions requires a Pit/Front Ensemble Crew and Props Crew of parents to help get the band seamlessly on and off the field for the performance. Ideally, we have the same crew for each competition, but that is not required. No experience is required, but there is some lifting and moving of band equipment and props necessary at times. We also need help with uniforms, and with loading and unloading the equipment trucks, and with supplying water for the band. Please sign up to help here:
We would also love spectators. Admission is only $10, including a program, and additional family members are only $5. Please arrive plenty early in case the schedule shifts.
