We Need You; Volunteer Now

Band and guard! Spring is here, the time when thoughts turn to...volunteering! We need much help this spring, and it's not too early to start thinking about how you are going to help next year (many of our jobs are currently filled by Senior parents). Mr. V is just one person, and everyone else who works to make the band program the wonderful experience it can be for the students is a volunteer. We need you, parents and students both. Please step up now to do your part.

The good news is that rising 9th grade parents Mary and Kevin Glasscock have stepped up to be BPO Co-Secretaries next year. That means we have a full slate for the BPO Board for next year: President Tracy McHone, Vice President Melanie Farr, Treasurer Tom Kraft, Secretaries Mary and Kevin Glasscock, Chair of Committees Kelly Sund.

The bad news is...well, just look below at everyone else we still need.

First, the band spring fundraiser (chocolate sale) is underway and individual sales are going for another week. Then we have group sales on Blitz Day, May 18. New this year, we are adding Metro stations during Friday evening rush hour on May 17, so it's really Blitz Weekend, plus a Dine Out at Jasons Deli on Friday May 17 after 5 pm, as well as some shifts on May 4, May 11, and May 26 for those who are not available May 17-18. We are not emphasizing playing music at the locations, since that has been hard to pull off well in the past, but it's optional. We are trying to have more locations, so fewer students per location (up to 3). The Blitz is an All-Hands-on-Deck fundraiser. ALL BAND STUDENTS (including marchers, concert band, symphonic band, wind symphony, jazz band, colorguard and winterguard) are asked to please sign up for a shift. We need a parent chaperone at each shift, too, please. This money helps us purchase music, replace aging instruments, provide instrument-specific sectional instruction, pay competition fees, grant scholarships, and so on. This is NOT a Pearl Harbor fundraiser. Sign up today!

There are multiple Pearl Harbor fundraisers as we finish out the school year, though, and please remember we are asking all Pearl Harbor student performers to volunteer for at least 4 fundraisers. We also need adult volunteers. Sign up today to volunteer at:

  • May 11: Marshall's Got Talent benefit concert, benefiting...us! We need approximately half the Pearl Harbor student performers and an adult from half the Pearl Harbor families to make this a success. We'd love to see all non-Pearl Harbor attendees in the audience.

  • May 22-23: Marshall Band's spring concerts concessions and 50-50 raffle

  • May 25-26: Viva Vienna Booth for people to pick up t-shirts they've already bought, and for us to take more orders

  • June 6: Kilmer Band's spring concert at Marshall concessions and 50-50 raffle

  • June 8: Pearl Harbor Door-to-Door. This is another an All-Hands-on-Deck fundraiser. ALL PEARL HARBOR STUDENT PERFORMERS AND AN ADULT FROM EACH PEARL HARBOR FAMILY are asked to please give us the whole day.

And following are all the positions for Committee Chairs, or Team Leads, or People in Charge, or whatever you want to call them, that we need adults to take on. We will gladly take rising 9th grade parents also. Experience is great, but any of these jobs can be done by someone without experience but with willingness. You may not think you can be in charge of something, but you might need to be, or the students might be walking out on the field to perform in their underwear. Everyone else is a volunteer also, and we cannot do it all. Please let This email address is being protected from spambots. If you are not a Senior parent and you did one of these jobs this year, we know who you are, we appreciate you and would love for you to do it again, and this is the time for you to take a minute to renew your commitment, please. But, please don't anybody new hold back from volunteering for something because you think someone else might volunteer for it--we can have co-chairs! And the person you are thinking of might really like some help.

May 30, 2019 Band and Guard Spring Banquet: This is a potluck, so you don't need to bring the food or even put out the SignUpGenius. You do need to shop early for plates, cups, decorations, etc., and come early to oversee set-up, and stay a little later to oversee clean-up. It sure would be nice to have a banquet for all marchers, concert band, symphonic band, wind symphony, jazz band, colorguard and winterguard and their families to celebrate the year, recognize our graduating Seniors, and find out who the section leaders will be next year, so we hope someone signs up to organize it.

All of the following are for next year (2019-2020), but many of them start this summer. The starting months are listed. Please, think about it for one day, then email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This email address is being protected from spambots.
